BN MPs: Use courts not emergency rule to break Perak deadlock

by Neville Spykerman. | Malaysianinsider

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 — With no end to the constitutional crisis in Perak, speculation is rife that the federal government may impose emergency rule to break the deadlock as was done in Kelantan in December 1977.

However Barisan National (BN) ministers and Members of Parliament who spoke to The Malaysian Insider, in Parliament today, said they would rather the Government used the courts rather than more drastic measures to break the deadlock.

Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin said “I don’t think so” when asked if emergency rule should be imposed and added that they should turn to the courts to resolve the impasse.”I think we should exhaust all legal recourse available to us.”

He said he hopes the problem can be solved as soon as possible so the state government can get down to business.

De facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said “Why should it be (Emergency Rule)? The government is still there.”He said BN assemblymen should file suit against the decision of the speaker, to suspend them from the state assembly, and get the courts to decide.

Nazri said although the Perak speaker has wide powers, he did not have jurisdiction to make the decision outside the House.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Shahrir Abdul Samad said he did not want to respond to speculation and said the courts should be used to break the deadlock.

He also lashed out at the Perak speaker for not acting impartially.“The speaker is from Pakatan Rakyat and he was not acting independently.”
