Police have banned a Pakatan Rakyat ceramah due to be held in Simpang, Taiping, where the main draw was a keynote address by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim .
The charismatic leader had been expected to present the latest state of play of the political events overtaking Perak and the rest of the nation. Pakatan Menteri Besar for Perak Nizar Jamaluddin was also due to take part.
The political lecture will now be held outside the PAS office in Bukit Cempedak. Thousands are been expected to attend the ceramah, organised as part of Anwar’s two-day visit to Perak and Kedah, ahead of the upcoming Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau by-elections.
According to Taiping OCPD ACP Raja Musa Raja Razak, the permit for the assembly was withheld because the location, which he alleged was near the main road, could affect traffic flow and public safety.
“Police will take stern action against those who stage or participate in the assembly,” he said.
