Hadi blames ‘arrogant’ BN for Perak crisis, arrests

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 2009, Malaysianinsider

— An “arrogant” Barisan Nasional that does not respect the law has led to the chaos in the Perak state assembly and the string of arrests outside the building, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang charged today.

He said the party regrets the violence used outside and within the building as police detained nearly 70 people, most of whom were wearing black, and later physically removed Pakatan Rakyat Speaker V. Sivakumar from the chamber.

"PAS will not respect a government that does not show its respect to the law and the country's constitution," Hadi said in a statement released to party website HarakahDaily.

He said Barisan Nasional leaders are arrogant and do not respect laws or religion while also hiding behind the badge of the security agencies.

"This time, not only Pakatan Rakyat leaders and supporters were arrested but also several parliamentarians elected by Perak people too," he said, referring to the arrest of Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa and Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar.

Others arrested outside the state assembly building include PAS Youth chief and Kubang Kerian MP Salahuddin Ayub, Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, Batu MP Tian Chua, four assemblymen and members of the public.

Police have freed 13 out of the 65 arrested today.
